10. Surgery, Shamanism, and Psychedelics │Françoise Bourzat and Dr. Dan Kelly

Episode Summary

Françoise Bourzat and Dr. Dan Kelly came to the psychedelic therapy movement from very different places. Bourzat, a somatic psychologist, has spent decades in the mountains of Mexico, learning the traditions and rituals around the use of psychedelic mushrooms. Dr. Kelly has spent years in operating rooms, removing brain tumors. But they couldn’t agree more on one big thing: psychedelics have the potential to transform mental health by helping millions of people who suffer from alcohol use disorder, depression, PTSD, anxiety, and existential crisis associated with disease and loss. Bourzat is a consultant at PNI’s new Treatment & Research in Psychedelics (TRIP) program, where she, Kelly, and others are readying a clinical trial to study the effectiveness of psilocybin, the active ingredient in psychedelic mushrooms, for treating alcohol use disorder. Other clinical trials are in the works. In this week’s podcast, they discuss the growing body of evidence that convinces them of the potential in psychedelics. They also explore why just a single trip with a psychedelic, done in a safe, clinical setting with expert guidance, can have such profound and lasting effects.
